Mission

Image
The mission of US Council on Osteopathic Manual Practice Education is to promote excellence and assure quality and integrity in Osteopathic Manual Practice Education in United States of America.

How Long Does Accreditation Last?

Accredited programs and institutions are periodically reviewed for re-accreditation to ensure quality standards are maintained. Moreover, standards are continuously improved through comments from osteopathic manual practitioners, educators and other communities of interest. If there are complaints or problems that need to be addressed, the program or institution must resolve these quickly. Programs that fail to meet requirements will require additional reporting and/or site visits to determine continued compliance. If programs fail to correct noncompliance issues within the established timelines set by UCOMPE, adverse actions will be applied, which include, withdrawal or revocation of accreditation.

What Gets Evaluated?

•Teaching •Professional Program Curriculum •Ethics/Integrity •Evaluation & Assessment of Outcomes •Faculty Qualifications •Financial Resources •Information & Learning Resources • Mission & Planning • Organization & Administration •Physical & Training Facilities • Student Support Services

How does accreditation work?

The UCOMPE functions independently and autonomously in matters of developing and approving accreditation standards, making accreditation decisions on educational programs and developing and approving procedures that are used in the accreditation process. Accreditation in higher education involves an internal review/self-study by an education program followed by an external review/peer-assessment process that ensures improvement of academic quality and public accountability. As a part of the peer-review process, students at educational programs have an opportunity to comment and are often interviewed by evaluation team members to ensure an accurate picture of the student academic experience.

What is accreditation?

Accreditation organizations review and evaluate an institution or program, and provide “a stamp of approval” that standards of quality are being met. UCOMPE ascribes to a Code of Good Practice established by the Association of Specialized and Professional Accreditors.

Who is the UCOMPE?

The US Council on Osteopathic Manual Practice Education (UCOMPE) is the only national accrediting agency for osteopathic manual practice education (OMP) programs in the States. UCOMPE employs a rigorous, collaborative peer review accreditation process to evaluate the quality of OMP education programs.

Why is Accreditation Important?

• Accreditation establishes minimum standards for hours of instruction, subject areas to be taught, the competency of faculty, learning resources, finances etc. • These minimum standards attest to the quality of the program. • The qualities of an osteopathic manual practice (OMP) program are vested in the 1. commitment to excellence by the administration and governing board 2. soundness of the institutional programs 3. abilities of its faculty and staff 4. caliber of students 5. adequacy of its facilities and finances • The course credits of one accredited OMP program will be recognized by similarly accredited programs and will be transferable. • The diploma or degree received by a graduate from one accredited OMP program will be recognized by other accredited OMP programs and can be taken to fulfill educational requirements that are prerequisite to admission to study for a higher degree. • The diploma or degree received by a graduate from an accredited OMP program w...

Accreditation Committee

The role of the Accreditation Committee is to assess osteopathic manual practice (OMP) educational programs and the capacity of the teaching school offering the award to do so according to specified standards. The Accreditation Committee considers not only the curriculum and the delivery of education, but also the ability of the program to ensure quality outcomes, the resources available and the performance of graduates. A program seeking accreditation is required to provide the Accreditation Committee with a Self-Evaluation Report addressing the required Standards. The Accreditation Committee will appoint an inspection team which includes osteopathic manual practitioners. The inspection team is responsible for undertaking a comprehensive review of the program which includes site visit. The inspection team will then prepare a report for consideration by the Accreditation Committee. The Accreditation Committee will then make a recommendation to the Council for accre...

OMP Program accreditation

Osteopathic manual practice (OMP) program accreditation is a multi-level process which aims to evaluate and continuously improve educational effectiveness based on firstly self-evaluation by the relevant OMP program followed by verification and validation by the Council. The US Council on Osteopathic Manual Practice (UCOMPE) undertakes the accreditation function by: • Developing Standards for the osteopathic manual practice education which sets out the accreditation process for review and evaluation. These Standards emphasize the use of outcomes assessment measures and detail the Criteria for Accreditation which establish the minimum education expected to be received by students who are studying to become osteopathic manual practitioners (also known as manual osteopaths, European style osteopaths or osteopaths, outside the USA). • Maintaining an Accreditation Committee. The Accreditation Committee is responsible for interpreting the Standards, implementing the proces...
